5 Reasons You Absolutely Need To Wear Cologne
Years ago I was waaaay into cologne.
Walking into a place like Sephora was dangerous for me.
I had bottles upon bottles on my shelf.
And then one day I inexplicably made the (poor) decision not to wear fragrances anymore.
I don’t remember exactly why, possibly something to do with hearing that the chemicals might be estrogenic.
At any rate, the further I got down the road of figuring out the attraction puzzle, the more I realized that I needed to get back into fragrance to stand out.
From there, I found Jeremy Fragrance, and it was all over!
(By the way, Jeremy Fragrance has the biggest fragrance channel on YouTube, and I think it’s clear why. Go check out some of his videos.)
I still have a modest collection, but it’s growing kind of fast…
Maybe you are big into fragrance now, or maybe you have never purchased a real bottle of cologne before in your life.
Either way, here are 5 reasons why you need to wear cologne.
1) Colognes Are The Only “Magic Pill” We Have To Make Us Instantly More Attractive
It takes a while to get your body in shape when you first start working out.
Realistically you have to work for months to lose the weight, or put the muscle on, or both.
And that affects the way you look in your clothes, so while these are all important things, they take time.
Fragrances are different.
Get a good fragrance, spray it on and BOOM!
You are instantly more attractive and appealing to your wife (and other women).
As long as you apply the fragrance properly (ie NOT TOO MUCH!), people will notice.
You may even find people asking you what you are wearing.
But even if people don’t say anything about it, you know that you’re not turning them off with your odor.
And there is nothing else you can do that’s this easy to enhance your attractiveness.
2) Colognes Make You Pay More Attention To Your Hygiene And Style
First let me state one thing plainly:
Do NOT attempt to use fragrances as a substitute for showering or general cleanliness!
That said, getting serious about fragrances will change the way you approach personal hygiene and style.
When you have a fragrance that you love and are excited about, you won’t want to detract from the characteristics of if by having weird odors on your skin or risking your hair smelling funny and clashing with it, or any other weird thing you can think of.
You also will tend toward healthier, more neutral smelling grooming products like shower gels, shampoos, etc.
You won’t want any of the cheap, synthetic chemicals from that crappy shower gel to interfere with your cologne.
And it will affect the way you dress.
Just like you wouldn’t wear your ratty-ass sneakers with a nice suit, you need to somewhat match your cologne to your outfit.
If you’re not into fragrances yet this may not make sense, but trust me it will.
The notes (scents) blended into different fragrances will lend themselves to different looks.
Some are very formal, masculine and powerful and need to be worn with something like a suit.
It would be incongruent to wear them with your gym clothes.
Some are light and soapy or maybe floral and go much better with a polo or a nice t-shirt, but wouldn’t go with that same suit.
So you’ll begin to pay more attention to how you put yourself together.
Which leads into the next point…
3) Wearing Cologne Changes Your Attitude
Attitude about what?
Once you start putting some thought into your hygiene and style, things will feel different.
Then you’ll probably notice that the nature of your fragrance can enhance your mood.
Also when you consider point number 1 above, it can give you more confidence.
And then with point number 2, if you know you look good AND smell good, you’ll feel great.
When you know that you smell good, you won’t be hesitant to be close to people.
When you’re not self-conscious about the way you smell, you’ll find it easier to interact with people.
These things will be small steps toward making you come off as more manly, more alpha and therefore, more attractive.
Now, this is not the same magic pill that
Over the long term, this confidence will change your overall attitude.
4) Scents Trigger Memories
There is a cologne called Givenchy Pi for Men that I absolutely love.
I first came across it back in about 2005, when I lived in Vegas.
Something about it really drew me in.
It has a fairly unique ingredient in it, benzoin resin.
This is a smell similar to vanilla, but more of an intimate, dirty, sexy vanilla.
So, it’s a little bit sweet, vanilla, powdery kind of fragrance to me.
But more important, smelling it takes me all the way back to Vegas and some of the stuff I did when I was there.
Scents have been a part of the human experience for as long as humans have been around (however long you think that is!)
Even if it’s not a cologne, you probably have smells that instantly transport your mind back to a period or moment in time.
Maybe it’s the smell of your mother’s cooking.
At any rate, scents trigger memories.
Maybe your fragrance reminds you of something good, and that is yet another thing that adds to your confidence.
As an added bonus, you fragrance could bring back a fond memory to your wife.
And if there’s nothing like that in your life right now… It’s time to start.
5) Having A Signature Scent Makes You More Memorable
We’ve already established that scents trigger memories.
Why not use this to your advantage?
When you find a scent that works for you, makes an impression and smells amazing, you can wear it regularly.
People that come in contact with you on a regular basis will start to associate you with that scent.
They will remember that you smell pleasant.
Next thing you know, that scent will remind people of you even when you’re not around.
Now, it’s not the easiest thing to find your signature scent, but it’s worth it and fun to experiment!
Bonus – 6) Women Love It
I’m a big proponent of improving yourself… for yourself.
If you are only doing something to please a single other person, then you may find that you’ve completely wasted your time.
But If you set out to make your life better to benefit yourself, then you always win.
That said, it would be disingenuous of me to say that we don’t improve our bodies, clothes and even smells… to attract women.
Even if we’re married.
We still do the stuff that we do so that women find us attractive.
Whether that’s to start things back up in our own marital bedrooms, or to find someone new, we want to be attractive.
So let’s not ignore that.
And that said, you absolutely need to wear cologne because women love it.
Of course not all women love all fragrances, but ladies want you to smell good.
They’re generally not that interested in your natural musk, at least not randomly out in public.
A woman you don’t know may compliment your fragrance, but the best you can hope for if you’re not wearing a fragrance is that you smell neutral.
And that doesn’t get you any attention.
So smell awesome and attract women.
The Downsides of Getting Into Cologne
I think there are even more reasons that you need to get into learning about and wearing colognes.
But there is a dark side…
1) Colognes Are Addictive
Believe me when I say this.
You start out with your one all-purpose, versatile fragrance.
Then you realize that you need one that works a little better when you are wearing a suit.
And this one smells great, but it’s a bit too strong for everyday wear at the office.
Of it smelled awesome in the winter, but now it’s too sweet, heavy and cloying in hot weather.
So you look for another.
Next thing you know you have bottles ranging into the double and triple digits.
Your wife thinks you’re crazy.
You haven’t touched that first fragrance in months.
Now you’re watching FragComm channels on YouTube to see what’s new, or what people recommend for your newest situation.
Once you start, it’s hard to stop!
2) Cologne Collecting Can Be Expensive
Not all good fragrances are expensive, but lots of them are.
There are quality colognes that you can get for $20-40, but you have to know what you’re looking for.
But a lot of the good ones (and the recommendations I’ll make below) can get a little pricey.
We’re talking $70-100+ per bottle, even the 1.7oz bottles.
And that’s to make no mention of the truly high end stuff that can get up in the $400-500+ range.
So it turns into an expensive hobby.
The good news is that with a little work, you can find sales and bargains out there.
Those are the main precautionary things I can think of, so on to some recommendations!
Feral Fitness’ Starter Cologne Recommendations!
If you’ve made it this far, maybe you are sold on getting your fragrance game rocking, but don’t know where to start.
There’s so many out there.
Just walk into any department store and it’s easy to be completely overwhelmed.
There’s a huge mix of smells.
The bottles smell one way, then it smells different on those little cards, and different still on your skin.
What We’re Looking For
The fragrances I’ll recommend are generally ones that play it safe, are masculine and should be easy to find locally to try out.
They won’t be super unique, but are versatile and generally appreciated by most people.
I recommend you head to your local mall and find major department store (we have Belk here), or a Sephora store to look for these fragrances.
The reason for this is that you need to actually try them out on your skin and see how they work for you over the course of several hours.
I’m actually comfortable recommending these as blind buys, but if you can try them out, so much the better.
So here’s what you do:
Find a store that has them (and this should be easy).
Spray one on each wrist, then another on each arm a little farther up (maybe in the crook of your elbow).
Don’t buy anything yet.
Fragrances react in different ways to different peoples body chemistry.
Your body temperature, oils on your skin and many other factors can influence how much a fragrance projects, how long it lasts, etc.
So spray them on and smell them over the course of 8 hours or so.
Make note of which ones are still strong, which ones have scents that you like, what your wife likes, etc.
Then you’re ready to make a purchase.
Now The Recommendations (For Real This Time)
(If you want to skip all the above and purchase directly from my affiliate links that works too, but no pressure!)
These are all fragrances that I personally own and wear right now.
I bought them all with my own money and don’t hesitate to recommend that you try them out.
It’s fresh, masculine and you can wear it just about anywhere.
You should also be able to find it at any store.
I say go with the Eau de Parfum (EDP), even though it costs a little more, it should give you a little better performance than eau de Toilette (EDT).
You probably know the original Acqua di Gio, but they spiced it up with notes of incense and patchouli.
This one is sexy for sure.
I think it probably goes better with nicer clothes, but still versatile enough to be all you have (for now).
I find it a little light on performance for me, so it winds up being more subtle later on and that’s why I recommend testing it out.
This one is a little sporty, but mostly a clean, fresh fragrance that you can wear just about anywhere.
This is a good one to spray on if you’re just running out of the house for a quick errand.
Smells great, may even get you compliments!
This was an early blind buy for me, and I wear it quite a bit and go for it when I’m not sure which fragrance to use.
A tried and true masculine fragrance.
Tobacco, amber, citrus.
This may not be quite as versatile as the others, but it is a great fragrance.
I highly recommend purchasing this at Amazon, because the price is currently unbeatable.
Once again, I say go with the EDP instead of the EDT.
So there you have it.
My intro to cologne and why you absolutely need to be wearing it.
So what are your thoughts?
Have you tried any of the colognes on this list?
Love them? Hate them? Have other recommendations?
Let me have it in the comments.
Until next time.
